Conceptual Reality's fuse deposition modeler (FDM) operates by extruding a bead of melted plastic filament through a thin nozzle. The plastic is laid down in layers which fuse together to form an ABS plastic part. This system can sometimes be more economical than laser-based systems. The FDM can also form nylon and investment casting wax parts. Because of its versatility in using these modeling materials, FDM can be used for producing small volume prototype parts without the need for tooling. |
