Functional models are designed to simulate the properties of the final product in as many ways as possible. This can include electrical properties such as EMI resistance as well as physical properties such as weight, heat deflection and strength. Functional models are used to verify the performance of the design in various operating environments. They enable engineers to evaluate designs early in the development process, while it is still cost-effective to incorporate changes.

Solid Concepts produces Functional models using PolyJet, Stereolithography (SLA) , SLS, CNC, and Cast Urethane technologies, depending on the specific requirements. Functional models can be produced in as little as 1 or 2 working days.

  • SLS & DMLS
    SLS® produces rugged Nylon 11 and Nylon 12 prototype and production parts. DMLS utilizes metal and alloy materials to create strong metal parts without tooling.
  • FDM
    FDM (fused deposition modeling) produces both prototype and production parts from ABS plastic, polycarbonate, and Ultem materials.
  • CNC
    CNC prototypes, parts and master patterns are ideal in applications where the material property or size requirements make other prototyping techniques unsuitable.
  • Cast Urethane
    Cast Urethane (a proprietary advanced casting technology and advanced formula polymers) produce strong pre-production and short-run production components.
  • Composites
    Composites (fiber reinforced plastic) technology produces large, rigid, accurate panels with excellent strength-to-weight ratio and surface finish.
